BJP scripts history in Assam
New Delhi, May 19: The BJP today made history in Assam by getting its first government in the north east, decimating Congress which was dethroned in Kerala too even as two women Chief Ministers Jayalalithaa and Mamata Banerjee romped home for a second consecutive term in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Suffering a rout in the current round of assembly polls, the Congress could take heart only from the fact that it managed to wrest power in Puducherry from its breakaway group AINRC with a simple majority.
The high-stakes elections saw the end of Congress rule in Assam where it had scored a hat-trick last time under Tarun Gogoi.
With Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as its Chief Ministerial face, the BJP and its allies AGP and Bodo People's Front scored a landslide victory, cornering 86 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
The BJP won 60 seats on its own.
The AGP bagged 14 seats while the BPF secured 12 seats. Last time, the AGP had 10 and BPF 12.
The Congress, which had 78 seats in the outgoing Assembly, could bag only 26 this time. The AIUDF, led by Badrudin Ajmal, won 13 seats, against 18 which had made it the largest opposition party in the Assembly.
In neighbouring West Bengal, Trinamool Congress headed by Mamata Banerjee secured a two-thirds majority, fighting it alone against the Left-Congress combine.
Bettering its performance over the 2011 elections, Trinamool Congress, which had then contested in alliance with Congress and won 184 seats in the 294-member Assembly, has now ended with 211 seats in its bag.
The Congress improved a bit this time by getting 44 seats against 42 last time.
Its ally CPI(M) registered a big slide as it got only 26 seats against 40 it had last time, while its allies CPI got one, Forward Bloc 2 and RSP 3.
On the same eastern coast, Tamil Nadu defied its 32-year-old tradition and belied several exit poll predictions by handing a handsome victory to the ruling AIADMK led by charismatic Jayalalithaa.
Facing a tough opponent in the DMK-Congress alliance, the AIADMK managed to win 134 seats, 13 more than the halfway mark in the 234-member House.
Although it got a majority, AIADMK slipped on its past performance of 2011 when it had got 150 seats. However, it is for the first time since 1984 that a ruling party has been voted back to power in the state.
DMK, headed by 91-year-old M Karunanidhi, put up a strong fight and bagged 86 seats and was leading in 3 more till filing of this report.
This itself will be a first of sorts in Tamil Nadu Assembly where the opposition will be in big numbers. Its allies Congress won 8 and IUML one.
The PMK, which contested all the seats, and the third front headed by actor Vijaykanth drew a blank.
Kerala kept with its tradition as it voted out Congress-led UDF and handed over reins of power to the Left Democratic Front.
Congress, which was routed in Assam and Kerala, got a consolation victory of sorts in Puducherry as the party along with DMK stormed to power in the tiny union territory with a simple majority. The alliance bagged 17 seats in the 30-member assembly. PTI

India's future lies in secular nature

India has always portrayed itself as ideal democratic country where everyone is treated equally.  Since independence despite all the wrong, the whole world admired India for its unity in diversity. The country's founder who framed constitution has ensure that every Indian feel part of this growing country. India has always scored better in comparison to neighbouring Pakistan when it is matter of evolving as a country.

Since partition Pakistan has been under the grip of religious extremism. Mullahs virtually run the nation. Religious minorities like Christians, Hindu, Sikh etc are being persecuted on regular basis. India definitely offered better deal to the religious minorities. However, unfortunately in the last two years things are changing for bad. The present regime is trying to follow the path of their Pakistani counter. Free hand has been given to religious fundamentalists. Today minorities like Muslim, Christian live in constant fear. The BJP government has not taken any action against Hindu fundamentalist groups who are destroying the social fabric of India. Situation is so bad that some experts claim that India is emerging as next Pakistan of sub-continent. This is really worrying to hear.  If India is not to follow the same path to the dead-end of religious extremism as Pakistan, Modi must act boldly and decisively to defend minorities under attack anywhere in India and punish vigilante thugs. India has no future other than as a tolerant, multi-religious, secular polity. Hope Modi and RSS understand it.

Check attendance of Govt staff

Dear Editor,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily I would like to highlight the grievances of Likabali-Gensi area people against  non-availability of the Officer-in-Charge of PWD Division, Gensi in office.

I personally have had bitter experiences for couple of time as whenever I have visited the said office I always found most of the staff in general and officers in particular out of the station. I came to know that the Officer-in charge attends office hardly 1 or 2 days in a month, which creates difficulties for the common public to discuss various matters related to the said Department. Here, I fail to understand whether the Govt leave rules allow a Govt. Official to avail leave for so many days in a month or not.

Therefore, I would like request the concern Administrative Officer and Higher Authority of the concern Deptt. to look into the matter and ensure strict implementation of Govt rules and regulations for every official/staff to perform their entrusted duty sincerely so that the common public can  have easy access to every official matter.

Yours,

Linjum Doke

Peace and economic prosperity

Dear Editor

The neglected North East region of India holds great promises and potential for the future. It is one of the richest regions of the Indian subcontinent in terms of biodiversity.  The region is also rich with the grandeur diversity of various ethnicities, cultures, languages. It is one the unique parts of India where a large number of tribal and non-tribal communities have co-existed for centuries. Unfortunately, post-independence; the NE was never looked at from the perspective of building infrastructure and economic opportunities; but rather as a strategic extension of the Indian subcontinent. The Indian government most possibly inherited this approach from their British colonial masters.

However, after several decades of independence we do observe a new change in the political dynamics of the region that may have huge opportunities for the people of the region in the not so distant future. Currently, after several decades there are favourable governments in adjoining Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar; and the Government of India has been working sincerely to develop strong socio-economic, strategic and diplomatic relationship with them. Attempts are being made by the Central and State Governments to develop much needed infrastructures both within the national boundaries in the adjacent NE states and even across her international boundaries.

The NE no doubt is an important part of India for the development of Eastern Economic Corridor to connect SE Asia through Bangladesh and Myanmar. Railway networks and highways are also under development and if this could continue for the next decade the region will be economically transformed. However, it should be the responsibility of everyone to establish total peace in the region. The Naga Peace Accord and the positive dialogues of some fractions of ULFA in Assam is a positive development. The feuding groups in NE as also the insurgents need to understand that there are options within the framework of the Indian constitution for common development and protecting the integrity, culture, language and ethnicity of different tribes and sub tribes inhabiting the region for several centuries and their uniqueness is recognized and greatly respected.

It is time for the people of the region to throw their differences away and come closer on a common platform for establishing long term peace for ensuring economic progress for the region. If not anything, the long term peace in NE will boost tourism several folds both from mainland India and adjoining countries but also from western tourists to whom the NE is vastly unknown and under-explored. If long term peace is established and there is no fear of further extortion, kidnapping, torture and gunfights; the transit trade across NE to SE Asia and national and international tourism will economically transform every single family in the region. Through your esteemed daily I beg all the stakeholders to come forward and work together with the government for establishing peace and economic prosperity of the region.

Yours,

Saikat Kumar Basu
